Chiropractic

Chiropractic is non-surgical and drugless form of therapy and, with the McTimoney approach, gentleness and reliance on the hand are emphasised. In essence, the McTimoney technique comprises a series of high-speed / low-force adjustments to joints in the body. The swiftness of the adjustments requires sensitivity and skill and, once mastered, the McTimoney method has proved extremely effective.

The treatment involves examination of the bones and joints of the body to check for imbalance, however slight. Any problems found are corrected with various pain-free adjustments. The bones are never forced into place, but are adjusted with a very rapid movement and immediate release.

If areas of the body are out of balance, they can affect the whole; therefore the entire body is assessed at each treatment. McTimoney chiropractic aims to restore nerve function in order to promote natural health. This involves re-educating the patient's muscles and bones into better alignment. Regular check-ups are recommended to ensure the body maintains a healthy balance. Special care after falls etc can prevent further problems arising.

The relatively gentle and holistic emphasis of the practice lends itself to preventative and wellness care. People often come to us because they feel out of alignment or unstable, and they want to know why, as well as to have treatment to help prevent future problems. People who have had issues in the past, which have been resolved, also seek treatment to maintain their healthy state.

Advice on posture, exercise and sporting technique, and strategies for approaching activities of daily life, are of huge importance in achieving and maintaining health, and this is very much part of the treatment.

We believe that the body has a powerful, innate ability to heal and maintain itself, but sometimes it needs a helping hand. If you'd like to watch a video of Ben Bridger treating a patient using the McTimoney method, please see the Treatment page.

Scientific Evidence

A large amount of scientific research has been conducted that has confirmed that chiropractic is both safe and effective. A recent study conducted by the British Medical Research Council found that patients who received chiropractic treatment for low back pain experienced a greater reduction in disability than those who attended hospital outpatient departments. The benefits were also longer lasting. The study recommended that chiropractic treatment should be made available on the NH,S or be subsidised by the state, as it is in Scandinavia, Switzerland, Israel, Canada and New Zealand.
